Holly’s Writing Tips
By reading lots of different books, you’ll learn what makes a fantastic story.
“It’s important not just to read things you know you will like, but to try different sorts of books .”
A good way to make your story feel real is to think about people you know.
“Try and imagine how your characters would feel – sometimes you can almost act out their conversations in your head – that really help.”
Inspiration is everywhere. Perhaps you overhear an interesting conversation, see a beautiful landscape or meet a fascinating person.
“Lots of the animal stories I write are based on things that really did happen. Most of the books link back to a true story.”
Plan out your story to make sure all the pieces of the plot fit together. Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best.
“Planning gives you a chance to think through how you want the story to move along. Do you need an exciting, adventurous bit in the middle? Or perhaps a sad part?”
A good story has you gripped by the end of the first page.
“You could try writing about something that really happened to start with – I quite often base my animal books on a little bit of reality, and then imagine what might have happened next.”
This is an obvious one, but it’s important to remember. Practise your writing as much as you can and you’ll just keep getting better and better.
“Write about things you know well, like your school or your friends or your pets. The best tip is to keep writing and don’t give up!”
